Day: Sunday 25th Jan 2009
Time: 4pm-ish
Location: The Flume, Warrnambool Vic
Wind: Moderate sea breeze
Swell: 2 -3 foot wobbles
Something else: surfing with old man Johns (again)
Conditions: a little bit “Ground-hog Day” onshore mush, with a lucky section here and there. The call of “Beer’o’clock” came pretty early today, if only we could find a wave in!
Vibe: a couple of good old boys in the water, not big on the communication down south I guess? Somethings don’t change, and that’s the way we like it, sometimes…
Day: Sunday 25th Jan 2009
Time: 9am-ish
Location: The Flume, Warrnambool Vic
Wind: Clean offshore conditions – moving to a light sea breeze later in the morning
Swell: 2 foot clean swell, the odd 3 foot set and surf-able section
Something else: Australia Day long weekend camping trip to Warrnambool, surfing with old man Johns

Up at a Sparrows fart for this shot! Around 6.45am, being a couple of hundred km’s west means a slightly later sunrise than home.

Clean and (Warrnambool) fast.

“The Shipwreck Coast” putting on a little show for a select audience.
Conditions: Clean and fast says it all, almost all the elements that produce great surf dropped into place on this morning, just one thing missing, a bank for the waves to break on. This is a common issue in the region and the defining factor that relegates Warrnambool beach break surf as generally pretty poor. Really nice in the water though, a classic little morning.
Vibe: Interesting crowd in the water, dominated by holiday makers no doubt. Plenty of fading going on, wasn’t hard to find your own wave, waiting for the right one was the challenge…

Day: Saturday 24th Jan 2009
Time: 4pm-ish
Location: The Flume, Warrnambool Vic
Wind: Strong sea breeze
Swell: 2 foot washing machine with the odd section
Something else: Australia Day long weekend camping trip to Warrnambool
Conditions: Old memories come rushing back, lots of things have changed in this town since our Uni days but not a lot has in the surf. Afternoon southerly buster (onshore), with 2 foot of southern juice, get caught on the sand bar on the paddle back out through a set and you know your not at home any more. Nothing special but great to get back out at the Flume, knowing we were only there for 3 days and would be heading home to better banks and surf options!
Vibe: Surfed with Mr Johns, no other distractions apart from the seal rolling around over the Grannies Grave reef/kelp bed.
Wanted to have a crack at airbrushing some smoke for a while now, such a cool “fluid” element, although often a bit obnoxious in real life. What better format than on some fins? Nice and small, reducing the project timeline to an evening in the garage, perfect for my current state of mind – having trouble getting back to the canvases that have hours in them and many more to go…

Automotive base coats on sanded FCS fins (FG-5’s) Cleared with spray enamel.

Some of the smoke is working better than other parts, the reference images I have were pretty complex so I was picking out bits and pieces as I went, didn’t go back and correct anything, very organic workflow! And I’ll be surfing these until the paint falls off – then I might spray something else on em…
Day: Thursday 22nd Jan 2009
Time: 6.45am
Location: Fairhaven Vic
Wind: Light offshore under
Swell: 2 foot – then washing machine

Conditions: Nice clean morning, tide a little too high making for some fatness. Banks are not ‘high tide’ friendly either, with sections quickly running into the easterly summer time trench. Nice to have some clean waves but looked better than it was.

Vibe: First in the water at Fairhaven, very quiet this morning, you really had to look for people to surf with (if you like that kind of thing). A few guys paddled out, very cruisey overall.
Day: Tuesday 20th Jan 2009
Time: 1.30pm
Location: Fairhaven Vic
Wind: Light sea breeze – then gale force SW change
Swell: 2 foot – then washing machine

Conditions: Very bad timing, I caught 2 waves before the change hit, turned to mush before I knew it. Was super clean and pretty straight this morning but I missed it. In the water for about 30min max, all over in a matter of minutes once that Southwesterly hit.
Vibe: Had it to myself, everyone else was smart enough to surf early…
Dribble before the change hit – it actually got a lot worse!
A really good friend of mine has a little surf brand OME, after seeing some of my airbrush work he said to me that I had to spray a display board for him. He said I could paint anything I wanted on it, I went for something classic and I think timeless, a perfect point break like this will never go out of style.

I picked up the ref image over at the Surfy Surfy blog and sent JP an email when I had finished the piece, he was nice enough to post it.
Day: Monday 19th Jan 2009
Time: 4.15pm
Location: Fairhaven Vic
Wind: Moderate to light sea breeze
Swell: 2 to 3 foot with odd 4+ footer

Conditions: Swell pulsed this arvo, wasn’t really expecting it, obviously don’t have my finger on the coastal watch swell forecast… A little raw and with a couple rouge closeouts hooking in and cleaning everyone up. A few fun ones in between, if you picked the right one off. A couple of rips producing so run-outs and mostly left peaks working their way through. The sets were really churning the sand up, definitely a lot more power around than the last couple of days. An offshore wind would have made things very interesting, adding some height to faces and holding sections up that little bit longer.

Quick snaps: in between bigger sets (I couldn’t stand around all day taking photos!)
Vibe: Relaxed, a few guys out, mostly dodging the sets and picking up the odd straight-hander. The current(s) played a bit of havoc, with multiple runouts it was possible to get dragged in any direction depending on where you sat. Not that crowded but I seemed to be doding guys on every wave I dropped into…
I had these hanging around the house from a previous home audio purchase, I don’t use headphones a lot so they were just collecting dust. I also had a new fine tip for my airbrush that I needed to test out and what better than a small scale artwork? I dismantled the headphones, gave the plastic covers a light sand. I made use of some leftover automotive base coat paints from another project, I pulled a quick reference pic off the web and got stuck into painting some skulls! Not terribly creative I know, but they fit well and I took some inspiration from the skullcandy product line.

I hit the completed artwork with some rattle can, clear enamel, hence the average finish quality on the gloss!
